10 Tips To Turn Your Bedroom Into a Restful Space
Sleep Hygiene
Adopting healthy sleep habits, commonly known as ‘sleep hygiene’ among professionals, involves establishing routines and behaviors that not only facilitate falling asleep quicker but also promote longer and more uninterrupted sleep.
Some of the factors that can either contribute to or hinder a restful night’s sleep are listed below such as mattress, sheets, pillows, lighting and more.
Invest in good bedding
Fabrics that breathe well and may contribute to sleep comfort include natural fibers like cotton and linen. Fabric choice, too, is a matter of personal preference and can often depend on the seasonal temperatures where you live.
While cotton and cotton blends are still the most popular choice in the U.S., representing about 80% of sheets on the market today, consumer choice often changes with the wind. Inflation, sustainability, and “performance” can all impact preferences and purchase decisions.
Change your sheets once a week or every two weeks a the least
You spend a third of your life in bed, so clean bed linens should be one of your must-do chores. Plus,You shed 500 million skin cells a day. Many slough off while you roll around in bed. All those dead cells pile up on your sheets in between washings. Think of the drool, sweat, dandruff, and other “stuff” you leave between the sheets.
You might be surprised, but it’s recommended that you change your sheets once a week, or every two weeks. Hygiene is a big factor, and one of the reasons is sweat.
In fact, a whopping 73 percent of people surveyed by the National Sleep Foundation in 2012 said they got better sleep on fresh sheets—and 85 percent reported general sleeping improvements. Washing your sheets might be a pain (and let’s not even talk about that duvet cover and pillows) but it’s important.
Pillow Talk
Where you rest your head at night can be full of fungus — some can be dangerous to those with asthma. If your pillow — the fluffy thing itself — can be washed, do so at least twice a year. Follow the care label on how to do it. Make sure to rinse and dry it well to prevent mildew. If you use a pillow protector, toss it into the wash along with your pillowcase. You can also contact your local dry cleaner and ask them if they offer such service.
Let your sheets breathe each morning
You may have heard that the best way to kick start your day is to make your bed. But it might be wise not to rush. That’s because moisture builds in your sheets after each night of slumber. When you wake up, peel back the covers and give your bed a chance to dry. That makes it a less attractive nesting spot for bacteria and mites.
Trouble between sheets: Avoid Dust Mites
To achieve more high-quality rest, consider the potential for allergens in your bed, and how to keep them away. Tiny dust mites love to feed on the shed cells. The critters and their droppings can trigger allergies, asthma, and cause your itchy eczema to flare. If you’re allergic to dust mites, wash bedding every week in hot water.
Furry friends in bed?
When Rover or your feline friend leaves behind their hair and dander on your bedding, it’s like offering a buffet for dust mites. While you won’t catch mange, also known as animal scabies, from your pup, your skin might still become itchy and irritated. Additionally, your pets can transmit ringworm of the scalp, a fungal infection. To keep things fresh, aim to swap out your sheets weekly.
Eating in Bed is a NO NO!
Sounds relaxing when you can have your Sunday coffee and croissant in bed. doesn’t it? but consuming food in the bed causes food particles to be left on the bed and overtime makes it a perfect environment for those dust mites to show up and share your bed, making the sleeping environment unhygienic and unhealthy.
Lights and devices
In the evening, avoid the sleep-disrupting blue light that emanates from electronic devices by shutting off televisions, laptops, smartphones and tablets an hour or two before bedtime. When it’s time for sleep, many people benefit from a very dark bedroom, so try to block out any light by covering your bedroom windows well. A light-blocking eye mask can also be a helpful tool.
